PARTIAL LIST OF LA FARGE PROJECTS

    

BILTMORE ESTATE - Asheville, NC.

Restoration of eight stained glass panels by John La Farge, originally designed and installed at the Vanderbilt Mansion on 5th Avenue in New York. Wrote condition reports and restoration specifications. Supervised restoration to include : documentation; cleaning; edge-gluing; addition of structural fins and supporting plates; partial releading and design of an isothermal installation. Windows included: The Ladies of Commerce; Prosperitas and Hospitalitas; and the Putti panels.

LAFARGE EXHIBITION - NMAA, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.

Restored nine of ten windows exhibited. Consulted with museum staff for designs of light boxes, exhibition space and shipping crates. Supervised the conservation of the windows and the mounting and dismounting of exhibit at 2 of 3 venues. Supervised crating and shipping from the NMAA to Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh and then to the Museum of Fine Art, Boston. Windows included in the Exhibition: Butterflies, Arabesque Fire Screen, Boston Peonies in the Wind, Washington Peonies in the Wind, Fish, Bacchus and Child, Peacock and Peonies from NMAA, and Dawn on the Edge of Night. ( Project completed while Vice-president of Greenland Studio, New York)

FIRST UNITARIAN CHURCH, PHILADELPHIA

Presented seminar, co-sponsored by the Church and the Philadelphia Historic Preservation Corporation, in which sixteen professionals from across the country worked together to restore an 1891 La Farge rose window from the church. Window measures 10 feet in diameter. Restoration included: documentation; cleaning; removal of roofing tar; edge-gluing; addition of structural fins and supporting plates; partial releading; replication of missing glass; design and installation of a vented, laminated-glass protective-glazing system. To date, fifty per cent of the window has been restored and reinstalled.

PRIVATE COLLECTION

Restored a door panel measuring 26" x 68" and a section of a window panel measuring 28" x 24". Restoration included: documentation; cleaning; edge-gluing; addition of structural fins and supporting plates; partial releading; and replication of missing glass.

NELSON-ATKINS MUSEUM, KANSAS CITY, MO

Restoration of Peonies in the Wind by John LaFarge. Restoration included: Preparation of detailed condition report and restoration specifications; photo-documentation; cleaning; edge-gluing; partial releading; addition of structural fins and supporting plates; and replication of missing glass. Designed, fabricated and installed custom wood display case. Executed in conjunction with Jack Cushen.

OLD PHILOSOPHER WINDOW, Thomas Crane Library, Quincy, MA

Restored Old Philosopher window by John LaFarge, Thomas Crane Library, Quincy, MA. Window is very well fabricated employing a unique process developed by La Farge. Central panel comprises thousands of pieces of glass, fused together, with thin copper strips between the pieces. Restoration included: documentation, epoxy edge-gluing and infusion including development of rotating stand to ensure proper infusion; design and implementation of additional support system; design and implementation of an iso-thermal glazing system. Restored in conjunction with Jack Cushen.

JUDSON MEMORIAL CHURCH, NEW YORK, NY

Removed, stabilized and crated three monumental figure windows by John LaFarge. Windows to be stored at the Church during fund-raising campaign. (Executed while Vice-president of the Jack Cushen Studio, New Jersey.)

ST. LOUIS MUSEUM OF FINE ART

Supervised the restoration of Hollyhock and Peony windows for the St. Louis Museum of Fine Art. Both windows flattened, partial re-leading, gluing of pieces, additional support added (44" x 96"). ( Project completed in 1985 while Vice-president of Greenland Studio, New York)

FRICK BUILDING, PITTSBURGH, PA

Inspected the "Fortune" window for the building owner. Prepared condition report and photographed the window. Prepared restoration recommendations including a revision of the lighting system. ( Project completed in 1984 while Vice-president of Greenland Studio, New York)
